Abstract

The crisis of trust in church institutions demonstrates that the legitimacy of Christian leadership can no longer depend solely on office, hierarchical position, or personal charisma. This study examines the relationship between Christian leadership, institutional trust, and moral authority and develops a leadership construct based on moral credibility. It employs a qualitative approach using library research through theological and conceptual analyses of biblical texts and academic literature. Mark 10:42–45, 1 Peter 5:1–4, and 1 Timothy 3:1–7 provide the theological foundation for evaluating the exercise of authority in Christian leadership. The findings demonstrate that the moral legitimacy of Christian leadership is constructed through four interrelated dimensions, namely moral integrity, institutional accountability, relational humility, and public consistency. This study positions moral credibility as the conceptual link between leadership quality, institutional trust, and the church’s moral legitimacy. Restoring trust therefore requires both the transformation of leaders’ character and the reform of institutional structures within the church.
